Personally i think a "simplistic" method should be taken.
most minecraft servers today are all the same two types.
what about a server where the "guestroom" is room 1? where /rules tells you how to warp to other rooms. Something different is what i think we should strive for.
many people like nice organized servers with strict ruling and fixed buildings, others like ruined servers with little to no moderation where chaos reigns supreme.
Alternatively have you thought of a survival server? SMP runs fairly well with small populations.

Adabo though we poured many, many hours into the map. I would like to start anew.
a clean slate.
Another idea would be to have a "freebuild" zone but also have the builds copied into various themed areas.
Though id keep the number of separate rooms low.
PLUGINS yes plugins, something i had forgotten to mention.
personally id leave these up to you since so long as we can moderate what needs to be moderated we should all get along fine.
